When it comes to purchasing something as simple as a hamster cage you will be amazed at the choice and variety on offer. From there on in a simple task such as simply choosing the right cage for your hamster becomes a daunting and frightening experience! I mean, lets not forget these cages are not cheap, and the last thing you want to is find out that your hard earned cash has been flushed down the toilet. Your choice of hamster will primarily be determined by the type of hamster you will be accommodating. Syrian hamsters are larger than standard dwarf hamsters so you may need a larger cage that what was first expected.
Once you have decided on a estimate on size you must then decide the type of cage you will purchase. These include the following types:
Wire mesh cage
Plastic transparent cage
These two types of cages both have there advantages and disadvantages. With mesh cashes you will find the hamster gnawing at the bars leading to rust and paint coming off. As the mesh can easily clip off, they are easy to maintain and keep clean and simply involve changing the paper seated at the base of the unit.
Plastic cages come in various forms, some that look like miniature playgrounds for your hamster. These type of cages provide a lot of space and activities for your hamster so boredom does not settle in. purchasing this type of cage eliminates the problem of the hamster chewing the cage but maintenance is high, and you will find yourself cleaning the plastic cage at least 3 times a week. Both types of cage allow you in most cases to add extra features such as water bottles, tubing etc. It all boils down to your own personal preference on what cage is best suited to your needs as there is not a right or wrong answer.
Whatever you decide be sure that your cage come with a warranty. This is especially true of the plastic variety as they can easily crack id dropped or knocked every so often.
